Norman B. Chaney Print

Norman Blanchard Chaney was born on June 30, 1926 to Norman B. and Joan Chaney at Queens Hospital in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii.  He passed away at home on December 27, 2011.

altaltAt the age of one the family moved to Burlingame, CA where he attended school until he and his family moved to Yakima, Washington where he graduated high school in 1944.  Norm immediately joined the   Navy Seabees following graduation and served until 1946.  He then attended the University of Washington where he became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.  After graduating college he went to Dental School at the U of W during which time he married Alice Hail.  They were married for twelve years and had two children, Caron and John.  During this time they moved to Yakima, WA where he set up a successful dental practice.

He and Monnie Jo Fox were married in December of 1963 and had two children, Rob and Su.  One of the highlights of Norm’s career was to be appointed to the Washington State Board of Dental Examiners by the Washington State Governor where he served from 1981 – 1986.  Another was being instrumental, along with Weston Brown, in the establishment of the Dental Hygiene School at the Yakima Valley Community College.

Norm’s many interests included golf (or as he pronounced it… goff), tennis, working in the yard (even well into the night), an overwhelming love and devotion to his pets, and as all who knew him, the most rabid U of W Husky fan ever born!  Because of his intense aversion to shoveling snow he and Monnie Jo moved to the desert in southern California where they lived for ten years.  Ironically, his last move was to Boise, ID during an unusual snow storm right before Thanksgiving in 2010 and it snowed on the day of his passing.

Norm is survived by his wife of 48 years, Monnie Jo; his children, Caron McNamara (Dennis), John Chaney (Sallie – grandchildren, Jeff and Courtney), Rob Chaney (Emer – granddaughter, Fidelma), Su Stearns (David – granddaughters, Katherine and Sarah); and his brother Robert Hill Chaney.  He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice Care, specifically – Wanda Jo, Tammy, and Amanda for their extraordinary care and kindness.

A celebration of life will be held at the Yakima Country Club in Yakima, WA on January 28, 2012, from 2:00 – 4:00pm.  In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Camp Hodia (a camp for children with type 1 diabetes in Idaho), 1701 N. 12th St, Boise, Idaho 83702, www.hodia.org or to your local animal shelter.  Remembrances may be left online for the family at www.AccentFuneral.com

I have known Norm since 1981 when I moved to Yakima and asked my Seattle dentist, Dr. A. K. Solhaug, for a referral. I had the honor of being their financial advisor to the extent that Norm would take my advice! Dear people. I have you in my prayers. Tom

We loved Norm so much - it is so hard to know that he is no longer with us. He has been with us ever since he and Monnie moved away 1 year ago. I know that God will be with you and the family during this time.

My sympathy and prayers go out to you. I have wonderful memories of Norm. He, Bob Beasley, Tom Rosier and myself began our dental practices in 1954. One of the early highlights was meeting for lunch downtown Yakima and discussing our beginning practices and if they were growing and would we be a success. Of course we were all successful and enjoyed many years together in Yakima. He will be missed. Bob Bariletti

Norm was a good friend of my parents. He was my dentist and one of my favorite people ever. I have nothing but great memories of this wonderful man.

Dr. Chaney was a great dentist, he always joked and made me feel comfortable. I will never forget him saying "well I have a kid in college, open your mouth I have to find a cavity to charge you for.. well there is a small one but if we wait till next year it will grow and I can charge you more!"  Of course then he laughed and laughed with a twinkle in his eye. He was a hoot! I pray God gives you comfort thru your fond memories.

To the family of Norman B. Chaney, I am sorry for your loss. May you find comfort in knowing that God is "near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves." (Psalm 34;18) With sympathy,

We are so very sad to have lost our dear friend. Our love and thoughts go to Monnie, Sue, Dave and family, and Rob and Emir and family. He fought long and hard for so long, as did Monnie. We will miss him too.
