Mathias Minguel Fernandes, 82, passed away on May 2, 2009 with his family and Father. Arnie Miller at his side.  Mathias was born on February 24, 1927 in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.  He married Bernadette Barretto in 1953, and they were blessed with three children. 

Mathias worked for the British Company Raleigh Brothers in Tanzania for most of his working career.  He immigrated to the US in 1998 and settled in Boise, Idaho.  Mathias was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and volunteered at the church food bank.  He loved nature, and enjoyed taking walks, working around the house, maintaining the family car and anything else which needed repair. 

Mathias is survived by his wife Bernadette, daughter Fabia, son-in-law Billy D’Souza, granddaughter Brittany; son Franco, daughter-in-law Theresa, grandchildren Megan and Michael; daughter Dolly, son-in-law Lee Knawa; brother Felix Fernandes, and sisters Irene and Celsa. 

The family extends a special thank you to Dr. William Thompson, Rich Wezensky, and the EMS team for their timely help, the staff of Saint Alphonsus for their care during his time at the hospital, and the parishioners of St. Mary’s Church, families of St. Mary’s School, and all the dear friends who have been pouring their love, support, and kindness during this difficult time.
