Horace "Whitey" Berwind Print
Horace "Whitey" Berwind, 88, passed away December 30, 2009 In Kuna, Idaho of natural causes.
He was born April 2, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA to Horace E. Berwind, Sr. and Marguerite (Komp) Berwind.He grew up in Philadelphia and graduated in 1939 from Olney High School. He enlisted in the US Army during WWII, and was with the 32nd Infantry Division. It was one of the first units to engage in jungle warfare against the Japanese.

He was a heavy equipment operator in the construction trades, and a member of The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 542 for 58 years.

He married Claire E. Hoehn on July 19, 1947 at St. Timothy’s Church in Philadelphia. To this union were born Roberta (Berwind) Sailer, of Kuna, and Jack Berwind of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by his wife Claire in l978 and his grandson Joey Berwind in 1996. Following his wife’s death he moved about living in New Jersey and Florida before settling in Kuna's Leisure Village, to be near his daughter Roberta.

He was a regular on the bus trips to Winnemucca and greatly enjoyed his time in the casinos.

He is survived by his 2 children, Roberta and Jack, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren Per his wish, there will be no local services. Internment will be in Philadelphia, PA

I am so sorry to hear that Whitey passed on. I am glad he got to come home though and that you all could be with him. My Children and Grandchildren were the ones delivering the stockings for Christmas. We have done that for the past 5 years and we enjoyed talking to Whitey when we came to visit my Mom Rita who also lives there. Please accept our thoughts and prayers.
