Helen McNulty Print

Helen M. McNulty, 84, passed away June 24, 2009, in Boise, ID.  She was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa to Loyal and Helen Stoyell.  A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 21, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Boise with an open house to follow.  Arrangements are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian.

altMom, you walked the walk and talked the talk; this is why you earned the nickname St. Helen.  You were a strong example of Christ-like love; you never judged, lead with humility, chose honorable ways and showed compassion to everyone.  You nurtured and fostered life-long relationships, especially your 60-year marriage to Dad.  Not only was your union enviable, it inspired us to strive to live in peaceful, loving relationships and was an incredible influence on our lives.  Your silence was so often your strength; you rarely gave unsolicited advice, but when you spoke, we listened.  “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all,” was your primary counsel, but you understood the healing power of forgiveness.  We admired your heartfelt trust in the power of prayer.  Most importantly, you showed us how to love one another.  Even in your final hours, you blessed us with your humor and grace.  As we gathered around you, with a smile on your face, you spoke your last words, “I’m going home.”  Though it was a bittersweet parting, we take comfort knowing you are reunited with Dad in Heaven.  You were an exceptional gift and a tough act to follow.

Ladybugs, pansies and rhubarb pie will always prompt memories of Helen. Many were awed when she gave up candy for world peace, knowing the sweet tooth she had.  Many will remember her as a good listener or the neighborhood nurse, as she defined altruism.  She cherished her friendships and embraced them as part of our family and because of this we are all blessed.

Mom was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, son, Mike, two brothers and one sister.  She is survived by daughters, Mary Kohnke (Bob), Terri Limberg (Larry), Chris Blum (Parker) all of Boise, sons, Steve (Theresa) of Boise, Jack (Debbie) of Baldwinsville, NY, Tom (Lynn) of Marcellus, NY, and Dan (Kate) of Homer, AK,  13 grandchildren and 3 great- grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Corpus Christi House, 525 Americana Blvd. Boise, ID 83702.  Condolences may be made to the family at www.accentfuneral.com.

To the McNulty family - remembering your mom and dad and the way they looked out for so many of us when we were growing up on Syracuse's south side - know that they are together again, and probably telling my mom and dad about all of you and the years since they last saw each other. We lost dad and mom within 16 months of each other - the memories live on in all of us, as they will for you. Lean on each other and know you are remembered here in Syracuse. The O'Hara family from ST Anthony's - Peg, Jim, Mike, Mary Beth and Kevin.

I enjoyed knowing both Helen and Dick while I was working at Piper Jaffray/later UBS. They were two of my favorite people and we had lots of wonderful visits by phone - and in person -they were great together and had wonderful memories of fun times together. They always mentioned how wonderful their children were and just exuded happiness - even when their health failed.

My sincere sympathy to all of you on the death of your dear mother. I remember her so very well from our days at St. John's and as neighbors in Forest Hills. She was always filled with graciousness and great, good humor. I do believe she is "at home" and I pray you will all have comfort in this assurance. God bless all of you. Pat MacLaughlin
