She attended school in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho from third grade through high school.   Helen moved with her family to Boise, Idaho in 1941 and she attended the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho where she became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta, a national sorority.  She met Warren Hill, Meridian, at the University and they were married in 1945.  They raised three children in Boise and later sent all three children to the University of Idaho.  They were married twenty years and then divorced.  Helen returned to the University of Idaho where she graduated in elementary education in 1965.  She taught nineteen years for the Boise School District.

Helen was active in the Boise Senior Center where she organized many wonderful Harmon trips.  She met James L. Johnstone at the Boise Senior Center where they found they had common interests, both having lived in northern Idaho and both University of Idaho graduates.  She had a great love of animals, especially her cats.

Jim and Helen married August 30, 1995.  They enjoyed retirement and traveled to many places including England and Scotland.  Jim passed away October 21, 2001.
