David Lyon Print

On May 4, 2011, after visiting St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, David R. Lyon was called to be with his Heavenly Father following a heart attack.  David and his wife Kathy of 44 years were on a

altMediterranean cruise, where they visited Barcelona, Monte Carlo, Florence and Rome.  They were surrounded by radiant turquoise waters and were enjoying their time together at his passing.

Dave was born on December 4, 1946 to Deloris and Horatio C. Lyon in Spokane, WA. They later moved to Gooding, ID, where he was raised with his three siblings, Cathy, Ken and Mary Jean. Dave loved his small town upbringing, where he helped his father deliver gas to local farmers, enjoyed fishing, hunting birds, golf and basketball.  He graduated from Gooding High in 1965 and then attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, where he met his wife, Kathy Dudunake, and from this union they created three beautiful children, Nicholas, Gregory and Alissa Lyon.

While attending Idaho State University, David began working for the Union Pacific Railroad, where he began his career as a janitor or “red cap” and worked his way up through various upper management positions. Dave retired in 2001 after 34 years of exceptional service to the Union Pacific Railroad.  He then moved to Boise, ID to be closer to family and to enjoy time golfing with his brother, Ken.

Dave was a man full of life with a contagious smile, who loved his wife, children and grandchildren dearly. Dave is survived by his wife, Kathy; three children: Nick Lyon (Anita), Greg Lyon, and Alissa Lyon (Juan); five grandchildren: Brady, Parker, Adrien, Alex and Elena and sisters: Cathy Gropper and Mary Jean Jones. Dave loved his grandchildren and was always eager to teach them to fish. He enjoyed watching his elder grandsons, Brady play basketball and Parker play baseball, and was known to all the parents in the stands for his outgoing and fun nature.  Dave's truest personal passion was golfing. He was an active member of the Caldwell Men’s Golf Association and the Idaho Senior Golf Association where he played almost daily at Purple Sage Golf Course.

Dave loved the outdoors and liked taking long drives through nature.  Be it the seasons, a beautiful sunset, or a deer grazing in a field, Dave believed that nature’s beauty could only be witnessed so many times in a lifetime, and therefore must be enjoyed.  He savored the simple moments that life offered and tried to share this enjoyment with those around him.

A loving father, Grandfather, husband, sibling and loyal friend of many, David R. Lyon will be missed on Earth, but his presence and positive impact on all he loved will not be forgotten.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 16th at Holy Apostles Catholic Church, 6300 N. Meridian Rd. Condolences may be left for the family online at www. AccentFuneral .com. Services are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian.

I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Dave's passing. He was such a sweet man, I can honestly say I don't remember a cross word to me or my siblings. I am blessed to have reacquired myself to him in my adulthood. He was taken too young! My loving condolensces to Cathy, Nick, Grey and Alyssa, and all who knew and loved him. Who could have known him and not loved him? He will be sorely missed!

Good bye my friend and brother Dave. I will miss you dearly. Your support, smiles and forearm shivers will remain in my heart. Since I was 5-6 years old you would insist on showing me how to give shivers, they would hurt like hell and I would still flinch to this day when you came near. Now that you are far away physically, your kindred spirit remains near my heart. I will remember your smile and laugher forever. Love you, Harry Dudunake

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. The first time I saw that big smile was behind the working side of a football helmet, just before I received one of those forearm shivers that put me on my back. The next time was over 40yrs. later on the Canyon Springs Golf Course in a tournament (got thumped again). Heck of a guy and a true gentleman. He will be missed, especially by his friday golf buddys. God speed my friend and I'll see ya on the flip side. Rick

Kathy and family, I was deeply saddened to read of David's passing. I worked with him in the Engine Crew dispatcher's office in Pocatello in the late 60's when I, too was going to ISU. I immediately went into the Navy after graduating in 1970 so never saw David again. Though sad in reading of this passing, I was very happy to read of his successful career, your successful marriage, your faith, wonderful children and grandchildren. He enjoyed life when I knew him and that apparently never changed! Sounds like he was a great parent and thought there was nothing better than being "grandpa", as do I. I am sorry for your loss and hope you achieve peace solace with your family in David's legacy. I'm also glad he maintained his life-long love and skill at golf...something I never figured out! Our thoughts, prayers, and best wishes are with you all. Terry and Teresa Prisock, Boise, Id.
